Can I play the radio at my retail store

Ive been told that satellite radio is the only way to have music at my store without having to directly pay a music organization and artist. It seems to me that the radio should be OK because there are commercials generating revenue. Does anyone know what the actual laws are in the US, and are there any ways to have music without having to pay some sort of subscription? Thanks to the responders.
Answer1:If you want music without commercials buy an ipod and put music in there and connect it to the speaker system and you will not have commercials or you can play the radio. Its up to you.
Answer2:with any "public" music broadcasting, you probably have to pay royalties. even music radio stations pay royalties to the music companies/artists - even iPods could get you in trouble - google "paying royalties for music broadcasting" or something similar
