New bookwriter39;s Nightmare

I am a fairly new author. 6 months back I handed a transcript over to a person who agreed to type and edit it for 50 cents per page. although the agreement was verbal I had them sign a disclaimer stating that my transcript was not to be shared with others and nothing could be done with it unless i consented. This person has fallen off the face of the earth.although in the area. I am avoided at all cost and when called will not pick up the phone. Once the phone was picked up then hung up upon hearing my voice. The transcript is two years of hard work. My biggest mistake was not making a copy before handing it over. is there some type of legal action I can take to get my transcript back?* 12 hours ago* - 3 days left to answer.Additional Details12 hours agoFairfax,Va12 hours agotransaction took place in Warrenton,Va
Answer1:Really sorry to hear that, you have put a lot of time and effort into it. I hope you get it sorted out soon.
Answer2:You should never allow anyone to see your script until youve registered it in some way. At the very least, you need to send yourself a copy in certified mail, with all of the envelope seams stamped by the post office to prove that the envelope had never been opened - it would be opened on court as a last resort to prove you wrote it.As far as your editor, hopefully the are dodging you because they are behind in their work and not because theyve lost the transcript or are trying to steal it.
Answer3:Do you have any friends who are on the police force or work as security guards or do anything that have that kind of uniform? Because maybe showing up at the transcribers front door with what appears to be a police officer would scare them into at least giving you back your property.
