About 5 years ago my county, which is in a very rural part of PA, started public transportation. At first it was only 1 bus doing local stuff, then they started another bus that would take people 50 miles away into the city twice a day. Knowing that I could do better I started a bus service with 3 charter buses about 3 years ago. I dont do local service and run my buses into the city around rush hr time, so I get most of the workers. I do well, but were certainly not rich. Lately, Ive heard a few complaints from my workers about the city drivers. They are unionized, make more money, and have a ton more benefits, like health care, paid vacation, 401k plan, etc. I cant do that stuff. Heck, Im only running 3 buses! The problem is that the city cant do that either. They never make any money and consistantly run a deficit of over $2 million, but the state picks up the tab. They dont fire anyone, dont cut back on benefits, and dont cut back on their service. Now my employees are talking of unionizing. How can I compete with the govt? How can I compete with a bunch of idiots running a bus company that has nearly unlimited funding and doesnt care how much money they lose? My rates are better, my people are friendlier, and my buses are on time. Ive heard many stories about elderly cancer patients being stuck at the hospital because the city bus just didnt show up for one of their trips into the city. Thats just inexcusible. But, how can I, or anyone else, compete with them despite all their screwups? Its like Im just buying time until they run me out.
      Answer1:You cant. The city buses arent out to make a profit. It is a transportation service provided for very little money and funded by tax dollars. Perhaps you could apply for federal aid or something but there wouldnt be any reason for them to level the playing field for you when you are only out there for personal gain. It works the same way with the postal service yet companies like DHL and UPS are still able to compete. Taxi companies are another example. They fill a niche for people who dont want to take a bus but dont have a car. You just have to push on through.

My boss had a kick butt business. He listened to his "friend" who he hired. (who is a "me" person, a "know it all" and somewhat of a control freak) In the two years hes there, our customer base has dropped enormously, some wont come in at all because hes there.... He convinced my boss to "star" items from the menu, jack up the prices on everything else, because "volume doesnt matter"...which I think is a load of you know what. You dont mark everything up 300 % to get 50 people to buy that item, you make a decent profit to get the 150-200 people in the door like it used to be....We used to go through 50-70 steaks on Thurs nights. Now were lucky if we sell 25. Price is absurd. And we live in a small town, so news travels like lightning speed. The only thing saving his behind right now, is we have great pizza, and serve Beer and Booze... (but, weve lost customers because our beer is the highest around and people dont like the "friend") Which personally, Friends and Business, unless you are damn lucky and have that really good one, just DO NOT MIX) He gets a paycheck for doing next to nothing, and boss I suppose feels sorry for him because thats all he has after bankrupting his own business, TWICE!!! Would LOVE to hear business experienced peoples thoughts on this one....Anybody????

Im thinking about majoring in business with a specialization in international business, but im also considering a career in technology. What will be more high in demand? I am a Work-At-Home-Mom. I make custom baby carriers and sell them. Each of my carriers is one-of-a-kind. I buy my fabric from nationally trusted retailers such as JoAnn Fabrics, etc. I do not buy loads of fabric since I make them on an order-by-order basis (so I can customize for my buyer). How is the CPSIA going to affect me in particular? I am not the one importing the fabric or thread. Shouldnt my supplies be tested before I buy them? Also, even if they are tested, I usually only buy fabric remnants instead of whole reels. It would be ridiculous for me to ask for certificates for 1 yard of fabric. I feel like this whole thing is going to put me, and a whole bunch of others like me, out of business. This law came about because of the numerous recalls of childrens toys in the past two years and specifically the issue of lead in the toys. While I applaud the attempt at making childrens products safer, the law as stands, will actually remove many of the products that we have turned to in place of those made in China.As of February 10th, 2009, ALL childrens products sold in the United States will need to be certified to be lead free and many products will need additional testing. HOWEVER, think of the handcrafted items sold within the US. Think of any childrens item that is a ready made item that has been personalized with a childs name (it would need to be retested because it is the final sold product that needs to be certified). Think of the childrens items that are sold at craft shows, garage sales, ebay, consignment shops and fundraisers. As of February 10th, it will be illegal to sell any childrens products without certification, no matter when it was produced. Collectible vintage toys and trains? A "banned substance". You will not be able to donate items for charity because they are a "banned substance" since they are not certified. This applies not only to toys, but all products such as books, shoes, clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment, jewelry, etc. that are possibly intended for children 12 and under..--Answer1:Write to your congress person and your states senators. Ask them to sponsor a bill exempting domestic craft products from testing provided that the components are lead free.
